Our Chapter has many amazing presenters and teachers.  We will join Lisa Mandelstein to explore a gem of her curriculum with all Orff media: movement, singing, and instruments. Shane Troll will give us a wonderful tour into the richness of his vocal program. And Jeannie McKenzie and John Ashfield will have us singing and strumming with delight on the soprano ukulele.  It’s like a one-day Mini-Conference!

LISA MANDELSTEIN is a San Francisco songwriter, performer and music teacher currently in her twelfth year at Burke’s School for Girls in San Francisco.  She is trained in both the Orff and Kodály approaches.

SHANE TROLL is currently the director of music at Pinewood Elementary School, where he oversees the 3rd–6th grade classroom music program along with three children’s choirs.  In addition, he serves as the Associate Artistic Director of Cantabile Youth Singers.

JOHN ASHFIELD teaches K-5 classroom music in the Menlo Park City School District.  He is also the frontman for the pop band, “The Bobbleheads.”

JEANNIE MCKENZIE is the K-8 Music teacher at Windrush School in El Cerrito. Her resume includes teaching Orff, vocal technique, taiko drumming, yoga, circus arts, mime, modern dance, meditation and song writing.

Their core values include access to dance for all children, community service with integrity, and creativity as the foundation for dance in education. Luna’s Professional Learning Component and Model Programs work in tandem to bring high quality standard-based dance learning to all children while improving dance teaching practice and advancing the field of dance education.

Paul Cribari: Planning Performances Without Compromising Curriculum

Head Royce School Gymnasium, 4315 Lincoln Avenue, Oakland  94602

Please bring a bag lunch. There are no nearby places to eat and morning snacks are limited. Also bring a recorder if you have one.

There will be a FREECYCLE table if you wish to pass on useful materials to your fellow teachers.

In this session, we will explore the ways in which curricular content can be adapted and modified to meet the needs of a spring performance. Pieces will be drawn from the Schulwerk, and examples will be given for grades 1-5. Come prepared to play, sing, dance and create as we explore the ways curriculum can be integrated into performance!

PAUL CRIBARI is an Orff-Schulwerk teacher in the Cherry Creek School District in Colorado. There he teaches preschool through fifth grades, and conducts the school choir. In addition to his work with children, Paul teaches workshops and teacher training levels at numerous universities, and is a regular clinician for local chapters of AOSA. He received his Orff certification at the University of St. Thomas and has presented sessions several times at AOSA National Conferences.

GENERAL INFORMATION ON ONE-DAY CHAPTER WORKSHOPS

NCAOSA offers three workshops per school year, free to members. Every other year, in lieu of the spring workshop, we present a three-day MiniConference in a retreat center in Carmel Valley.

We seek to host workshop clinicians who will model teaching practices that embody the philosophy of Orff-Schulwerk. Most workshops will provide material directly applicable to the classroom, while also proposing new avenues of learning and refreshing the creative spirit.

One semester of university credit is available through Cal State East Bay (Hayward). You must attend all three workshops above and complete a written assignment for each one. Fee: $90.
