    CREATIVE CREATIONS!

    Basic Orff Media for Composition and Cooperative Learning

    This session will explore techniques, improvisation and sequenced process for creating and playing successful and exciting student compositions. Hand drums, congas, barred instruments, and other surprises will provide the foundation with a strong emphasis on cooperative learning, accountability and classroom management. Bring a soprano recorder to this fun and creative workshop.

    CHRIS JUDAH-LAUDER teaches middle school music and is the Fine Arts Director at Good Shepherd Episcopal School in Dallas. In addition to her work with children, Chris teaches Orff training Levels, is an active clinician for in-service staff developments, Orff Schulwerk chapters and State Music Education Conferences, and currently serves as the Vice President of the American Orff-Schulwerk Association.

    GETTIN' INTO THE GROOVE: Hip-Hop, Language Arts and Theatre

    Combining hip-hop rhythm and movement with theme-based theater to create in-depth learning experiences for youth of all ages, dance/theater artists Sarah and Rashidi will begin by exploring hip-hop rhythmic patterns, movement and its history. Building on the storytelling roots of hip-hop, presenters will also include exploration of basic movement/theater exercises and strategies to enable the teacher to combine hip-hop music and movement with original themes and stories to create performance works that have meaning for both the artist and the audience.

    DESTINY ARTS CENTER in Oakland is an arts education/violence prevention center for youth ages 3-18 that has been serving the Bay Area community since 1988.

    SARAH CROWELL, Artistic Director for Destiny Arts and Co-Artistic Director with Rashidi Omari of Destiny Arts Youth Performance Company, has taught modern, jazz and hip hop dance, theater and violence prevention to youth and adults for over 20 years, received 9 California Arts Council Artist in Residency grants for her work at Destiny and a National Endowment for the Arts grant, and is the recipient of the 2011 KQED Women’s History Local Hero award.

    RASHIDI OMARI has been performing, choreographing, teaching and directing since 1993, specializing in B-boying, locking, popping, hip-hop, dancehall, house, Lindy-Hop, and other urban and partner dance styles. He has performed locally and nationally with hip-hop and modern dance companies and has taught dance, spoken word, poetry and violence prevention to young people of all ages at multiple dance and arts education organizations in the Bay Area.

    Our Chapter has many amazing presenters and teachers.  We will join Lisa Mandelstein to explore a gem of her curriculum with all Orff media: movement, singing, and instruments. Shane Troll will give us a wonderful tour into the richness of his vocal program. And Jeannie McKenzie and John Ashfield will have us singing and strumming with delight on the soprano ukulele.  It’s like a one-day Mini-Conference!

    LISA MANDELSTEIN is a San Francisco songwriter, performer and music teacher currently in her twelfth year at Burke’s School for Girls in San Francisco.  She is trained in both the Orff and Kodály approaches.

    SHANE TROLL is currently the director of music at Pinewood Elementary School, where he oversees the 3rd–6th grade classroom music program along with three children’s choirs.  In addition, he serves as the Associate Artistic Director of Cantabile Youth Singers.

    JOHN ASHFIELD teaches K-5 classroom music in the Menlo Park City School District.  He is also the frontman for the pop band, “The Bobbleheads.”

    JEANNIE MCKENZIE is the K-8 Music teacher at Windrush School in El Cerrito. Her resume includes teaching Orff, vocal technique, taiko drumming, yoga, circus arts, mime, modern dance, meditation and song writing.

    Standards-Based Movement Education

    This session will present a comprehensive introduction to standards-based dance education and investigate ways of integrating dance with music and other subject matter. Participants will deepen their understanding of the elements of dance and experience its relationship with music through exploration, improvisation and composition.

    Since 1982, LUNA DANCE INSTITUTE has grown from a local children’s dance program to a nationally recognized dance education organization providing services to children and adults.     Planning Performances Without Compromising Curriculum

    Please bring a bag lunch. There are no nearby places to eat and morning snacks are limited. Also bring a recorder if you have one.

    There will be a FREECYCLE table if you wish to pass on useful materials to your fellow teachers.

    In this session, we will explore the ways in which curricular content can be adapted and modified to meet the needs of a spring performance. Pieces will be drawn from the Schulwerk, and examples will be given for grades 1-5. Come prepared to play, sing, dance and create as we explore the ways curriculum can be integrated into performance!

    PAUL CRIBARI is an Orff-Schulwerk teacher in the Cherry Creek School District in Colorado. There he teaches preschool through fifth grades, and conducts the school choir. In addition to his work with children, Paul teaches workshops and teacher training levels at numerous universities, and is a regular clinician for local chapters of AOSA. He received his Orff certification at the University of St. Thomas and has presented sessions several times at AOSA National Conferences.

We are excited to bring you this feast for the senses hosted in the beautiful Carmel Valley. Our presenters are three internationally known local treasures who share a fascination with the interconnection of the visual and performing arts.

BLUE IS THE SEA

Sofía López-Ibor's sessions will present simple visual art projects using everyday materials and explore their potential to inspire work in music, poetry and creative movement. These engaging lessons using painting, drawing and sculpture will have just been published in her collection. Blue is the Sea (Pentatonic Press 2010).

MUSIC AND THE MOVING IMAGE

James Harding will explore the link between music and the moving image through miniature video projects using animation, stop-time, real-time shooting and simple editing. James has been exploring the film and music connection with middle school students at the San Francisco School, and has published related articles in the Orff Echo and the Orff-Informazionen.

EMBODIMENT OF FORM

Take a journey with Susan Kennedy though a sampling of simple to sophisticated possibilities when movement and sound partner with visual design. Play with a variety of visual materials (toys, foods, weavings) and incorporate found objects and spaces to generate individual and group movement design. A fresh perspective for all ages!

FEES for the MiniConference, which are in addition to our yearly membership:

Dorm rooms (3 to a room with a bathroom and shower) 2 nights: total $60.
